Adobe InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 have more preferences and adjustable interface settings than any other software I know. It turns out that they are scattered well beyond Edit > Preferences. So, if you want a complete tour of preferences...

I had been meaning to update my information about InDesign's document and application preferences, but when I got to thinking about it, I like to tweak InDesign far beyond the preferences. Many workspace adjustments need to be made, along with many global typesetting default settings need a bit of reconfiguring. Once you do all that fine-tuning and workspace saving, it all ends up taking quite a bit of time. So I thought I would expand the report to include a tour of preferences I like to set up; give a brief explanation of what you may want in a certain setting; and then also outline a way to backup and protect your many settings so that resetting preferences won't set you back by several hours.

What results is this new Adobe InDesign CS5 and CS5.5 complete tour of preferences, a 16 page, 8.5 x 11 inch report in PDF format.

An interesting feature of this PDF is the ability to change it to show either Mac OS X or Windows 7 screenshots within each page. To do this, I built some buttons in InDesign, and then edited the button's action from within Acrobat, and thus produced a PDF with switchable screenshot views. It is actually changing layer visibility within the PDF document. The odd thing is, you cannot do this directly from the button panel in InDesign, but you have to begin the process in InDesign, then complete it within Acrobat. At first I tried multi-state objects, but they don't survive when exportted to PDF format! I hope this helps if you are trying to build something similar!
